What is Homeopathy?
Derived from the Greek word “homios” meaning like or similar and “pathos” meaning illness, disease or pathology, homeopathy is best translated similar disease. Homeopathy is not home remedies, supplements, or herbal medicines. Instead, it is a gentle, safe, side-effect free method of using symptoms as clues to treat the body with homeopathic remedies in order to help it to heal itself.

The father of homeopathy, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann was discouraged by the medicines and medical treatment of his day (the mid-late 1700’s) and, more specifically, the harm he saw it causing his patients. For a time, he left the medical profession and devoted his attention to other scientific pursuits. However, he went on to discover the Law of Similars over two centuries ago and, through many years of experimentation and study, homeopathy was born.

The Law of Similars states that any substance which can cause symptoms when given to healthy people can also heal those same symptoms when given in minute amounts to people who are not well. In fact, the Law of Similars was not a new concept. Hippocrates wrote in the fourth century BC, “through the like, disease is produced, and through the application of the like, it is cured.”

Homeopathy uses potentized medicines made from plant, mineral and animal material under strict standards in homeopathic pharmacies. To date there are over six thousand medicines which can be used to treat and even cure many conditions and diseases. Used by aristocracy and royalty as well as the average patient in Hahnemann’s time, it is still used widely all over the world today.
